American Social Health Association (ASHA)
ASHA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STD's), and their harmful consequences to individuals, families and communities. Their Web site provides information on various STDs.
Consumer Health Information Service (CHoIceS)
The consumer health information service of the New York Public Library is a reputable and reliable Web site in the world of health and medicine.
Family Health Plus
This is New York State's health insurance program for adults aged 19 to 64 who qualify. The program covers people who do not have health insurance and limited incomes but do not qualify for Medicaid. There is a residency requirement; and if you are not a citizen you must be in certain immigration categories. You must enroll directly into one of the 18 health maintenance organizations (HMO's) that take the plan. Some of these HMO's are on campus during the semester to help with enrollment. Go Ask Alice!
Go Ask Alice! is a health question and answer Internet service hosted by the health education division of Columbia University. Alice answers questions about relationships, sexuality, and many other health topics. You can send in an anonymous question, and search the 2,000 archived questions and answers already at the site. Questions are answered in a factual, straightforward, and nonjudgmental way to help you make decisions about your physical, emotional, sexual and spiritual health. Go to Web site for more.
Healthy Life Students' Self-Care Guide Online
This program of the American Institute for Preventive Medicine discusses the most common health problems in order to help you make informed choices about your health. Questions are formatted to help you decide if you should see a health provider or use self-care. The program contains three sections:
- 20 common health problems such as abdominal pain, fever, stress, etc.;
- Issues of health and safety such as over-the-counter medication use, breast and testicular self-exam, etc.;
- Information on lifestyle issues such as sleep, exercise, tobacco use, and more.

MEDLINEplus
The National Library of Medicine's MEDLINEplus contains numerous resources to help you research health questions. The site offers information on health topics, medical dictionaries, databases for articles, clearinghouses for health literature, directories for finding doctors and hospitals, and more. New York Online Access to Health (NOAH)
NOAH provides health information for consumers on a vast range of health topics. Visit the Web site for more.
Planned Parenthood
Planned Parenthood provides information on health issues connected to reproductive health, sexual health, and women's health. Visit Web site for more.
Rx List
Rx List is maintained by a pharmacist as a free service to Internet users. The Web site contains product information on more than 4,000 medications. It includes the Top 200 prescriptions filled in the U.S. (over 2/3 of all prescriptions filled.) The site also provides hyperlinks to numerous other health resources on the Web.
Stu-Dent Plan
Stu-Dent is a comprehensive, hassle-free dental plan provided by New York University's College of Dentistry. Students receive high quality, affordable dental care through Stu-Dent. Visit Web site for more.
Student Health Insurance
GHI is a voluntary plan for students who are taking at least six credits can purchase. While not having as extensive coverage as some other plans, there are many providers who accept GHI. Payments are made on a quarterly basis. The enrollment period is open for a few weeks at the start of the Spring or Fall semester. Wellness Web
