What UMI Offers

Mentoring
The Urban Male Initiative at John Jay College is a program committed to student professional and personal success. Mentoring will take place twice a month for 12 weeks, with one session devoted to student support/mentoring and the other on professional development. The purpose of the group mentoring meetings is to provide an environment for students to learn from each other with the goal of producing peer mentors and leaders.

Graduate School Preparation
The Urban Male Initiative Team encourages UMI students to continue onto graduate and professional studies after completing their baccalaureate degree. The UMI program serves as a pipeline for several of the College's pipeline programs. These include The Ronald H. Brown Summer Law School Prep Program, The Ronald E. McNair Post- Bacclaureate Achievement Program as well as other opportunities for academic advancement.

Ronald H. Brown Summer Law School Prep Program:

The goal of the Ronald H. Brown Summer Law School Prep Program is to increase the enrollment of students at John Jay College of Criminal Justice (hereinafter “JJC”) who are first-generation and low income, and/or students from underrepresented groups in the legal profession, in law schools. This goal is met by identifying these students in their college years and providing them with early exposure to the study of law. Participants in the program are also encouraged to obtain Masters Degrees, join the Bachelors/Masters degree programs offered at the college, or apply for joint graduate/law degree programs. The Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program: The McNair Program serves first generation, low-income students and/or students from under-represented groups (especially African American, Hispanic, Native American and Pacific Islander). The major objective of the program is to help increase the participation of the above groups in graduate education, specifically in doctoral programs of study. In most cases, a doctorate is required for careers such as college professor, senior researcher, or policy analyst.
