The Department of Criminal Justice embraces John Jay College's mission of engaging multiple disciplines to understand the nature of crime and how society should best respond to violence and injustice.  The department faculty includes the current director of the Bureau of Justice Statistics, the editors of the Journal of Research in Crime and Delinquency and Criminal Justice Ethics, and the directors of the Center on Terrorism and the Center for Crime Prevention and Control.  The Department has responsibility for the Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice.  The BA is designed to equip students with the analytical tools to analyze and critique the criminal justice system.  Students will explore the nature and causes of crime, criminal justice institutions, and the law and legal systems.  The Department maintains a close relationship with the master’s and doctoral criminal justice programs, and encourages interaction among the students in criminal justice programs at all levels.  The department is home to the Health and Justice Project housed in John Jay College of Criminal Justice’s Department of Criminal Justice advances research and education in correctional health and healthcare. Established in September 2010 with funding from the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD), the Health and Justice Project has a wide range of academic, research, and advocacy activities with the ultimate goal of providing quality training and conducting innovative research at the intersection of criminal justice and public health.
